Materials: dyed basswood, spray acrylic
I call these art forms ‘Solid Form Mandalas’ and they are a further exploration into geometric forms and shapes. I went through a process of iterative drawing where I would create a basic shape then try to change it one piece at a time to come up with any variations. My favorites got included as features in pieces such as the one shown here. Every design started with a digital sketch used as a basis for creating a 3D model. Each piece was then routed from it’s own original rainbow wood laminate glued together from dyed pieces of basswood. The piece was then cleaned, finished, and sealed in spray acrylic. Finally I built the frame, tapered the inside edge and embedded the artwork in channels for a cleaner look.
